"Proud parents successfully fledge young Harpy Eagle!"
By Bradley Davis

We are proud to announce that the resident pair of Harpy Eagles (Harpia harpyja) of the forest patch at the Floresta Amazonica Hotel have successfully raised their chick to independence. Born in mid-February of 2006, the chick has grown to adult size and has been flying on its own for more than a year. Biologists with the Cristalino Ecological Foundation expect that the young Harpy will now move out on his own; we wish him all the best in his search for a territory and a mate! The young bird and the adults may still be seen occasionally near the nest site (some 5 minutes walk from the Hotel) or perched at forest edge near the football pitch or the fish ponds. It will be worth watching in the coming months to see if the successful parents nest again in the beginning of the refreshing season.
